Peace committee chief escapes attack

GHALANAI/ TIMERGARA, Aug 16: Baizai peace committee chief Malik Sultan Kodakhel and three volunteers suffered injuries when militants ambushed their car on Monday night near Lakhkar Kalli in Baizai Tehsil of Mohmand Agency.

Political Tehsildar Baizai Hameed Khan told Dawn that the peace committee chief was coming to his village in Lakhkar Kalli along with others when militants attacked them at 9pm.

The three volunteers were identified as Shahwali, Ibrahim and Salim. Later, two of the injured were shifted to Peshawar for treatment.

In Timergara, Lower Dir, unknown militants attacked a police checkpost at Hundak Hayaserai late on Monday night. However, no casualty was reported, official sources told Dawn.

Sources said that police retaliated and repulsed the attack. Sources said that 6 to 10 suspected militants had opened indiscriminate fire on the police checkpost set up inside a house and two adjacent shops near Kaladag on Timergara-Kumbar Road.

Later, the security forces cordoned off the surrounding areas and started a search operation, however no arrest was made till filing of this report.

The district police officer, Saleem Marwat, during a visit to the site after the incident appreciated the police officials on duty for repulsing the attack and asked them to keep an eye on the militants’ activities.
