Drugs court issues arrest warrants for seven men

KARACHI, Aug 14: A drugs court on Saturday issued warrants for the arrest of seven accused in two cases pertaining to manufacturing of unauthorised medicine and violation of the drugs law.

In the first case, four men — Imtiaz Ahmed, Haider Zaidi, Najam Sair and Mukhtar Ahmed — of a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company were accused of manufacturing unlawful syrup by copying a product of another pharmaceutical firm and a complaint was filed against them in April 2009 under the Drugs Act.

In the second case, a provincial drugs inspector carried out a raid on a medical store in Tando Mohammad Khan in Feb 2009 and found that the licence was not displayed at a proper place open to the public, authorised persons were not present at the store while the sale of drugs was being supervised by unauthorized persons, refrigeration facilities were not available and they could not produce the record of sale and purchase of drugs. A case was registered against Daulat Ram, Tulsi Das and Dharam Das under the Drugs Act.

A three-member jury of the drugs court, headed by its chairman Saathi M. Ishaq, issued bailable warrants in the sum of Rs100,000 each and Rs50,000 each against the seven accused till Aug 18 and Sept 10, respectively.

Meanwhile, the same court on Saturday found three accused guilty of violating the Drugs Act and imposed penalties.

The court imposed a fine of Rs15,000 on Ashok and Chatan Kumar, the owners of a medical store in Tando Allahyar, while in another case accused Lalu from the same district was also ordered to pay Rs20,000 fine.
