Family of WWII veteran loses medal to bandits

MANSEHRA, July 25: Armed robbers deprived a family of gold ornaments, cash and other valuable worth more than Rs1.5 million in Dodial area, police said.

The robbers also took away with them a gold medal, conferred by the British government on the head of the family during Second World War.

Police said that four armed men, two of them masked, barged into the house of Wajid Ali on late Sunday night. They locked the family inside a room and decamped with gold ornaments, an amount of Rs150,000, saving certificate worth Rs150,000, gold medal and other valuables.

Wajid Ali told police that the robbers asked about the gold medal, which was awarded to his father-in-law Captain (retired) Jahandad Khan by British government before partition, as soon as they entered the house.

He said that the robbers were speaking Pashto and Urdu. They did not talk in Hindko, he added.

PhD: The Hazara University produced second PhD, said a press release issued by the university here on Monday. According to the release, Dr Binyamin got the distinction of being the second PhD of the university and first in physics.

Dr Binyamin presented his research on the topic of “Structural, electronic optical and magnetic properties of transition metals doped III-IV semi-conductors” before dean of University of Peshawar Dr Riaz Khan, dean of Punjab University Dr Aafaq Ahmad and heads of the science departments of Hazara University.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-chancellor Dr Syed Sakhawat Shah said that it was a milestone in the history of the university.

“Time is not far when the university will stand in the top three universities of the country,” he added. — Correspondent
