88 arrested for selling fireworks

LAHORE, July 18: The police claim to have arrested 88 people for selling/displaying fireworks and registered 87 cases against them in a city-wide crackdown on July 16 and 17.

The police also seized a large quantity of fireworks from the arrested shopkeepers to prevent the use of fireworks in connection with Shab-i-Barat.

According to the operations police spokesman, different police teams acted against the violators and arrested 23 people on July 16 while 65 people were taken into custody on July 17.

On July 17, the City division police registered 30 cases, Cantonment nine, Civil Lines two, Saddar three and Iqbal Town and Model Town registered 10 cases each.

The spokesman said the police acted indiscriminately against the violators in the light of the Punjab government's orders and the prompt police action was evident from the fact that citizens, especially children, could not purchase and use fireworks during Shab-i-Barat.

He said no violations of the use of fireworks were reported across the city first time in the history of the Lahore police.

Vehicles fined: The City Traffic Police have taken action against 1,082 vehicles for violation of speed limit on Ring Road this month.

According to a release issued on Monday, Chief Traffic Officer Syed Ahmad Mobeen has directed circle officers of three sectors of Ring Road to educate road users about speed limit and other restrictions.

He directed the in charges to make proper security arrangements at all interchanges and guide the pedestrians to use overhead bridges instead of crossing Ring Road.

The CTO said information boards had been displayed at all entry points of Ring Road. He ordered the unit of speed guns to act strictly and indiscriminately against speed limit violators.
