Jirga awards death to ‘kari’

SHIKARPUR, July 8: A jirga held in Chak town on Thursday night awarded death sentence to a married woman, accusing her of having committed adultery, and let alleged adulterer man go after making him pay a fine of Rs130,000.

The jirga headed by Gul Khan Mirani, a notable of Mirani community, gave the verdict to settle the dispute over karo-kari between two groups of Mirani tribe.

The jirga declared Sumera, wife of Akbar Mirani, as kari and awarded her death sentence. It decided that she would remain in the custody of jirga-holder Gul Khan Mirani till the death verdict was executed.

The jirga gave a lesser punishment to the alleged adulterer Saleem Mirani and let him go after making him pay a fine of Rs130,000.
