Three infants die amid row between cop, paramedics

NAWABSHAH, July 8: Three infants died and a number of others deteriorated when Oxygen supply to the Paediatric unit of the Peoples Medical College Hospital was disrupted after a strike by paramedical staff because of a dispute between a ward boy and a constable here on Friday.

According to details Rashid Shaikh, a ward boy of Paediatric unit, was allegedly stopped and later thrashed by  Allah Wadhayo Zardari, a constable deployed at the hospital.

He, along with other cops, locked the ward boy in a temporary police picket within the hospital after which he became unable to change theoxygen cylinders installed in the unit.

The paramedical staff, instead of restoring supply to the unit, went on strike immediately after the incident as a result of which three infants died and a number of others became serious.

The dead infants were sons of Pir Ali Bux, Mohammed Safar and Abdul Jabbar. The paramedics ended their strike after release of the ward boy.

MS of the PMC Hospital, Dr Tufail Jagirani, was not available for comments.
