Policeman, `bandit` killed in shoot-out

KARACHI, July 4: A head constable and a suspected robber were killed and his three accomplices were wounded in a shootout in Korangi on Monday, officials said.

They said a police van of the Korangi Industrial Area spotted four gunmen on two motorbikes snatching cash and valuables from passersby in Mehran Town.

“As the police party moved forward, it came under heavy fire from the bandits that killed head constable Naveed Tanoli,” said SP Usman Ghani of Korangi Town.

“The officials in the van then called in more force amid an exchange of gunfire with the bandits. After hardly 10 to 15 minutes, the firing left one of the bandits, later identified as Nawaz, dead and his three aides – Sikandar, Abdul Sattar and Saddam – wounded. They all have been shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.”

He said the police seized two AK-47 assault rifles, a shotgun, a TT pistol and two motorbikes from the bandits, which the outlaws had snatched from people a few days back.

“According to the doctors, one of the wounded, Sikandar, is in a critical condition. The other two are out of danger and are being treated at the hospital,” added the SP of Korangi Town.
