PPP-S leader kidnapped from Kurram

PARACHINAR, July 1: Unidentified men on Friday kidnapped a local leader of Pakistan Peoples Party-S along with his relative in Lower Kurram Agency. A tribesman was killed when the kidnappers fired back at the residents who started chasing them, residents said.

Armed men attacked the residence of Malik Naseer Khan and kidnapped him and his family member Shah Jehan from Ahmadi Shama village.

One tribesman, Shah Zeb Khan, was killed in exchange of fire with the kidnappers. Sources said the kidnappers shifted captives to Shabak, a remote area near Afghan border. IDPs REGISTRATION:

Tribal elders on Friday demanded registration of over 1,000 internally displaced families in upper Kurram Agency.

A jirga was held in Parachinar attended by elders of Turi and Bangash tribes and representatives of affected families. It was informed that thousands of people became displaced in upper Kurram since violence erupted in November 2007.

They said the government had registered displaced families from central and lower Kurram who were being given relief items. However, displaced families in upper Kurram had been ignored.

Elders said a total of 700 families hailing from Turi and 400 families of Bangash and Mangal tribes had been displaced. These destitute families were living miserable life and concerned authorities had yet to provide relief items, they complained.— Correspondent
