26 cops sent to police lines for taking bribe

PESHAWAR, June 27: Some 26 policemen were transferred to police lines from the driving licence branch under complaints of taking bribes here on Monday.

According to a statement, the action was taken after thorough investigations by the SSP traffic, Mian Saeed Ahmad.

It stated that the action was taken to ensure transparency in issuance of licences to the applicants. Mr Ahmad said that several other officials, who had been in the traffic for many years, would also be transferred.

A desk has been set up at the traffic headquarters and people have been asked to submit written complaints in case they faced a corrupt official.

The SSP also said that being their duty they would remove all the encroachments in the Peshawar district to ensure smooth traffic flow. He asked the business community to extend cooperation to the police in this regard.

'MILITANT' HELD: A suspected militant was arrested from Shami Road here on Monday, officials said.

They said that the militant, identified as Mesri Gul of Shalobar, was associated with the Khyber Agency-based Lashkar-i-Islam. The police officials claimed that the suspect was planning to carry out a sabotage act in the provincial metropolis. However, they did not give details.

60 ARRESTED: Police have arrested 60 people on various charges during raids in parts of Peshawar district on Monday.

According to a police statement, eight of them were proclaimed offenders. —Bureau Report
