ACCORDING to a news feed by the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre of May 26, in response to a Supreme Court of India directive, the chief secretary has directed education, water and power departments in Uttarakhand to provide basic water, electricity and sanitation in all state schools.

Between May 18 and 25, 307 schools were provided with drinking water facilities, while an action plan has been prepared for 660 schools to get water through pipelines, hand-pumps and rainwater harvesting.

It would help immensely if Sindh Chief Secretary Subhan Memon issues similar directives to education, water and power departments to provide water, sanitation, electricity, and hygiene facilities (soap for hand-washing) in all schools of Sindh, with separate toilets for boys and girls.

This will reduce girls’ dropout rate by as much as 50 per cent in rural areas of Sindh.
