Over 70 `rioters` remanded

KARACHI, May 3: The courts of different judicial magistrates on Tuesday remanded over 70 suspects in jail custody in cases relating to rioting on Monday.

Rangers and police had arrested these suspects in different parts of the city on charges of rioting and destroying property in the aftermath of the killing of a senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement worker.

The police produced the suspected rioters before the judicial magistrates of Malir district and city courts. They sent all the suspects to prison on judicial remand for 14 days. The suspects were booked under Sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) and 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage etc.) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Some of the suspects claimed that they were labourers and had been picked up by the law-enforcement agencies while returning home.
