KARACHI, April 19: An anti-corruption court on Tuesday dismissed the bail applications of two education department officials in a fraud case.

Deputy Secretary Bashir Brohi and section officer Zaheer of the Sindh education department were booked for their alleged involvement in fraudulent appointment of lecturers.

The suspects through their counsel moved bail applications in the court.

The judge of special anti-corruption court, Karachi, Rashida Asad dismissed the pleas after hearing arguments from both sides.

The court in its order observed that the alleged act tantamount to affect the public at large and if such practices were not duly checked, education standards would deteriorate further.

The education department was performing a very important function of providing education to the masses and the involvement of the officials of the education department in such kind of activities would be a disastrous situation, it added.

Referring to a famous saying that if one wants to destroy a nation one should destroy its system of education, the court ruled that the suspects were not entitled for bail.

The case (FIR No 10/2011) was registered under Sections 161 (public servant taking gratification other than legal remuneration in respect of an official act), 165-A (punishment for abetment of offences defined in sections 161 and 165), 167 (public servant framing an incorrect document with intent to cause injury), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 477-A (falsification of accounts) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the anti-corruption establishment police station.

Rape case

Meanwhile, a sessions court dismissed the bail application of a policeman in a rape case.

Head constable Rana Tasleem along with his accomplices has been charged with allegedly kidnapping a 14-year-old girl within the remit of the Korangi Industrial Area police station in 2007 and subjecting her to sexual assault.

The accused through his lawyer moved the application seeking bail in the case.

However, the additional district and sessions judge (east) Chaudhry Waseem Iqbal dismissed the plea after hearing both sides.

The case was registered under Sections 376 (punishment for rape), 365 (kidnapping with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on a complaint of victim's mother.
