MQM-H men laid to rest; two buses torched

KARACHI, April 12: The slain leader of the Afaq Ahmed-led faction of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM-H), Akhtar Hussain, and his two aides, also killed in the same attack, were buried in the Landhi Town's Sherpao Colony on Tuesday, a party spokesman said.He said that scores of people, including representatives of political parties and area residents, attended the funeral of the slain vice chairman of the MQM-H.

Four people — Akhtar Hussain, Abdul Karim, Shoaib Ahmed and a passer-by — were killed in an armed attack on their car on Shaheed-i-Millat Road when they were returning home after meeting the jailed party chief, Afaq Ahmed, in the Karachi Central Prison.

The spokesman alleged that rival activists put up armed resistance when the bodies of the slain leader and workers were being shifted from the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth to the victims' residences in Landhi.

“We were given police protection and armoured personnel carriers but surprisingly the armed men intercepted our men and harassed them while the bodies were being moved,” he added.

Later, the funeral prayers of the victims were offered at the Muhammadi Colony, a locality in Landhi, and they were laid to rest in a local graveyard.

Meanwhile, the police registered an FIR in the early hours of the day. An official at the Ferozabad police station said the FIR (309/2011) was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder), 324 (attempted murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code against unidentified suspects on a complaint of Abdul Aziz, the brother-in-law of Akhtar Hussain.

Earlier, in what appears to be in reaction to the Monday killings of MQM-H members, unidentified men torched two buses in a span of 30 minutes on the National Highway.

An official at the Shah Latif police station said that armed men on a motorbike intercepted a private coaster of an industrial unit.

“They set the bus (JA-6231) on fire and also thrashed the driver as well as his assistant.”

A few minutes later another bus bearing registration number JB-4500 met the same fate near Murghi Khana bus stop near Quaidabad.
