HYDERABAD, Oct 14: The general body of the Sindh University Teachers Association (SUTA), at a meeting held here on Monday, rejected the Model University Ordinance.

It also announced to boycott regular teaching session from 10am onwards on Monday and Thursday as per the decision of the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA).

After deliberation, the meeting observed the Ordinance precluded representation of teachers on various bodies of universities which, it said, would render functions of these statutory bodies ineffective and create problems for smooth running of the universities.

It observed undue representation was given to administrative staff of the universities and audit and accounts procedures were replaced without any reason.

The meeting noted the representation of university teachers was reduced at all forums and the domicile jurisdiction of the universities was abolished.

It resolved the president, vice-president and secretary of the SUTA would coordinate with the FAPUASA and submit the point of view of university teachers of Sindh to the Federation.

Prof Dr Shamsuddin Shaikh presided over the meeting.

The general body of the association had also endorsed resolutions of the Federation at its meeting held on Oct 2 at the Punjab University, Lahore, in respect of the Ordinance and other issues.

SPLA ELECTION: The elections for the district and regional bodies of the Sindh Professors and Lecturers’ Association (SPLA) have been postponed till Nov 5, this was notified here on Monday.

Chairman of the SPLA’s election committee Prof Nazeer Hussain Pathan ascribed the postponement of polls on the commencement of the HSC supplementary examinations.

The exams will begin from Oct 21 and end on Nov 4.

According to the new schedule, the date for submission of nomination papers has been extended from Oct 15 to Saturday, Oct 19.

Professor Pathan has asked the college units to submit a list of members along with a photocopy of the demand draft paid in account of the SPLA, Hyderabad Region by Oct 19.

BISE: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Hyderabad has announced Nov 12 as the last date for submission of examination forms for the Secondary School Certificate Part-I and II (Class IX and X) Annual Examination 2003.

No late fee will be charged till this date.

Adds our Nawabshah Correspondent: The Teachers’ Association of the Quaid-i- Awam University of Science and Technology here on Monday boycotted the classes in protest against the proposed model university ordinance.

The teachers wore black arm bands as a mark of their protest.

Talking to newsmen, Prof Jan Mohammad Keerio, president of the teachers association, said that the ordinance was harmful for education and consequently the country.

He demanded of the government to withdraw the ordinance and warned that the protest of teachers would continue till the withdrawal of the ordinance.
