PO killed in shootout

FAISALABAD, March 22: A proclaimed offender (PO) was killed and a constable injured in a shootout in Factory Area police precincts on Tuesday.

A Gujranwala CIA police team led by Inspector Farahatullah Bhatti raided a house in Sir Syed Town's Street No 12 to arrest Abdul Qayyum, alias Jagga Butt, of Sitta Ram Mandar locality on Dijkot Road, who had come there to see his sister.

Butt broke through the police cordon while shooting. A bullet hit constable Shahid who was later taken to DHQ Hospital in critical condition.

The remaining policemen rounded up Butt in the next street and eliminated him.

The police later carried out a search operation in the house and took four family members into custody for harbouring the accused. The police also seized religious literature.

Talking to reporters, Inspector Bhatti claimed Butt was involved in terrorism activities in Gujranwala. He was also wanted in a murder case there and the complainant of the case accompanied the police during the raid, Bhatti added.

Butt was also a PO in another murder case registered with Factory Area police in 1998. FUMIGATION:

The district government's health department has launched a two-week fumigation campaign to prevent outbreak of dengue and other epidemics.

Inaugurating the campaign in Eisa Nagri, a Christian slum area near Ghulam Mohammadabad, DCO Naseem Sadiq said that the district government would specially focus on slums and officials engaged in the campaign would be strictly monitored. An evaluation report would be prepared to take appropriate action against negligent ones, he added.

He urged citizens to cooperate with the fumigation teams and also adopt precautionary measures against preventable diseases.

The district government has formed 46 teams to carry out the task and 22 of them have been equipped with fogging machines while the remaining 24 will fumigate streets, bazaars, stagnant water ponds and marshes manually. Secretaries of union councils and other staff of TMAs have been attached with the teams. FESCO:

The Faisalabad Electricity Supply Company (Fesco) will review its distribution schedule to improve supply to industry and agriculture sectors.

This was decided at a meeting of company's load management committee on Tuesday with Rana Mushtaq Ahmad in the chair.

The participants of the meeting decided that a special campaign would be launched with the help of media to create awareness among the masses regarding judicious use of electricity.

The chairman said efforts were afoot to improve the distribution system and resolve the issues of Fesco employees. He said that a number of consumers' problems would be solved by improving the load management.
