TIMERGARA, March 9: Eight alleged militants were arrested during a joint raid by police and security forces in Mayar Jandol area of Dir Lower on Wednesday.

Officials said that police and security forces raided Afghan refugees' camp in Mayar after getting information about the presence of militants there. They said that eight militants were arrested during the raid.The arrested persons were identified as Shad Mohammad, Mohammad Bacha, Bacha Gul, Lal Zeb, Zaheer Abbas, Najibullah, Ismael and Wazir Khan.

District Police Officer Saleem Marwat told Dawn that four of the arrested persons belonged to Afghanistan. Out of the remaining four militants, two were residents of Shamozi area in Swat and two belonged to Mardan district, he said.

The DPO said that two small machineguns, four guns, eight pistols and four rifles were also recovered from the possession of the arrested persons. The arrested men were shifted to undisclosed location for interrogation, he said.

ACCIDENTS: Two persons including a woman were killed and three others injured in two different road accidents in the district on Wednesday.

In the first incident, Barmula Khan was killed and his brother Fatehmand Khan received critical injuries when a Datsun pick-up fell into a deep ravine in Shapanko Kas area of Samar Bagh after it went out of the driver's control.

Similarly, wife of Noor Khan, a resident of Garam Chashma Chitral, was killed while Noor Khan and Hazratullah received injuries when a passenger van and a Shehzor pick-up collided head on in Sacha Mera area of Khall.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

NGO BANNED: A jirga of Toor Mang Darra on Wednesday said that ACTED, an NGO, would not be allowed to work in the area for its failure to satisfy the residents about its activities.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the jirga held at Khall. Addressing the meeting, Mohammad Zamin, Malik Fazal Rahman, Malik Zir Khaliq, Malik Shah Zarin and others alleged that the NGO was involved in activities, which were not liked by local people.

They said that NGO workers were asking irrelevant questions during damage assessment survey, being carried out in the area. “We will not allow the NGO to distribute ration or any thing else in Toor Mang area,” the jirga members said. However, they said that other NGOs could carry on their activities in the area.
