Man gunned down in Gilgit

GILGIT, Feb 27: A man was gunned down on Sunday evening in old Jaglote wagon station by unknown people, police said.

Police said the man identified as Akhtar Ali, resident of Gilgit city, was returning home after work, when he was attacked with sophisticated arms.

Culprits made their escape good after committing the crime.

Police said in another incident of violence, a man was shot at and injured who was taken to hospital.

His identity could not be ascertained.

Police and other security forces reached the site of offence and inspected the scene as there were some reports of firing in some parts of the city which did not cause any human loss. LAID TO REST:

The senior leader of Pakistan Peoples Party, Mir Nawaz Khan advocate, who was assassinated late Saturday evening, was laid to rest in Gilgit as hundreds of party workers and notables attended his funeral.

The late Mir Nawaz Khan has left behind a widow, five daughters and three sons.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested some suspects and are interrogating them vis-à-vis the murder of the PPP leader.

Following the murder, security has been put on high alert with law-enforcement agencies patrolling the town where atmosphere is tense.

Majority of business points and markets were empty of human beings on Sunday.

On the other hand, outraged workers of the PPP burnt tyres and blocked roads at some points of the city, chanting slogans against the police.

They demanded of the administration to arrest the culprits as soon as possible.
