Davis` immunity: Plea to summon Qureshi, Fauzia

LAHORE, Feb 15: A writ petition was filed on Tuesday in the Lahore High Court praying to summon former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and PPP Information Secretary Fauzia Wahab for giving contradictory statements on the issue of diplomatic immunity being claimed for double murder accused Raymond Davis.

Advocate Muhammad Azhar Siddique filed the petition in which he said Shah Mahmood Qureshi publicly stated that accused Davis did not enjoy diplomatic immunity while Fauzia Wahab said otherwise.

The petitioner-lawyer said the US ambassador and the counselor categorically declared that the person apprehended by the Punjab police as Raymond Davis was not Raymond Davis but his real identity had not been disclosed so far.

He said a fake person had no right to claim diplomatic immunity under the Vienna Convention or any other relevant law. He said a criminal case of forgery should also be registered against Davis.

The petitioner said Davis should not be released from custody or handed over to the US until it was decided by local courts whether he enjoyed the diplomatic immunity.

He prayed to the court to pass an order to try accused Davis for deliberate murder of two Pakistani youngsters and sentence him under laws of Pakistan.

He expressed apprehension that the foreign office record was being illegally removed to the interior ministry to tamper with the record of Davis.

He also prayed to the court to send the record back to the Foreign Office and copies of that record might be submitted to the court.
