Pakistan down Kyrgyzstan 2-1 in Fed Cup round robin

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan defeated Kyrgyzstan 2-1 in their Group II, Asia/Oceania, Group A, Round Robin match of the Fed Cup.

A press release issued by the Pakistan Tennis Federation said on Wednesday that in the first singles match Ushna Sohail sidelined Emilia Tenizbaeva of Kyrgyzstan 6-1, 6-1.

In the second singles, top seed of Kyrgyzstan Zhanilia Disheeva defeated top seed of Pakistan Sara Mahboob 6-0, 6-4.

In the deciding doubles encounter, Ushna and Sara defeated Emilia and Zhanilia 6-4, 6-2 and lifted the match.

Pakistan is placed in group ‘A’, alongside Indonesia, Philippines and Kyrgyzstan.

Shahida Farooq, a female executive member of the Pakistan Tennis Federation, lauded the efforts of the players.

“Pakistans female tennis players have the much-needed talent and the current win by the Fed Cup team is one of the examples of our professionalism,” Ms Farooq told Dawn.

She said the PTF should invest more in female players and “we are likely to shine at the regional and global level in tennis.”

Results:

Singles: Ushna Sohail (PAK) bt Emilia Tenizbaeva (KYR) 6-1, 6-1; Zhanilia Duisheeva (KYR) bt Sarah Mahboob 6-0, 6-4.

Doubles: Ushna Suhail / Sarah Mahboob beat Emilia Tenizbaeva / Zhanilia Duisheeva (KYR) 6-4, 6-2.
