Children`s `abductor` arrested

LAHORE, Jan 9: Police on Sunday arrested a middle-aged man who allegedly abducted two children sitting in their father's parked car in the Chah Meeran locality of Misri Shah.

City division SP Dr Shahzad Asif told Dawn that Sheikh Abdullah of Chah Meeran informed the police emergency at noon that unidentified people drove away his car from outside a confectionary when he went inside. His children, five-year old Noor Fatima and six-year old Faiq, were in the car which was switched on. As police relayed car's number and its specifications to the control room, a traffic warden stopped the car in Garhi Shahu and quizzed the 'abductor'.

The 'abductor', later identified as 55-year-old Javed Butt of Baghbanpura, introduced himself as grandfather of the children and left the scene, saying the call was relayed mistakenly.

The car was then stopped by another warden at Lakshmi Chowk and Butt was taken into custody with the help of a patrol team of the Racecourse Police Station.

The SP said interrogation showed that Butt was passing by the vehicle when he found it switched on and its driving seat vacant. He drove away the car “just for nothing”.

Butt, who appeared to be a psycho, told police he was afraid that his wife and children would kill him.

On Saturday, Butt called police to his home, fearing his killing at the hands of his family.

As Baghbanpura police were taking him to the police station for legal formalities, he jumped from the police vehicle and suffered minor wounds. He was taken to Shalimar Hospital where he was provided first-aid. Butt's brother-in-law later brought him to his Misri Shah residence on Saturday.

The children and the car were handed over to the complainant at the Racecourse Police Station. Butt was handed over to Misri Shah police and an abduction case was registered against him. BODIES FOUND:
