HAMILTON: New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has given himself the all-clear after undergoing blood tests to find out what had caused him to feel fatigued and ill during the first test against Pakistan, he said on Sunday.

Vettori was not his usual energetic self on the second day of the test on Saturday and was forced off for 20 minutes, with team manager Dave Currie later confirming he was ill and had undergone the tests.

The 31-year-old, however, said after his side were crushed by 10 wickets inside three days at Seddon Park on Sunday that he was “feeling better” and the blood tests had been unable to pinpoint the cause of his symptoms.

“I feel a lot better today,” he told reporters. “All my results have come back clear. I need a couple of days rest but I'll be right for the (second test at the) Basin (Reserve).”

Former New Zealand selector Dion Nash had said on radio on Saturday he had heard that Vettori had been tested for malaria, which Currie denied as “speculation” on Saturday.

Vettori said it appeared he may have contracted something while the team was in India last November but it was not malaria.

“News of that spreads pretty quickly and I know people are prone to a bit of hyperbole,” he said. “No, I'm fine.

“I think I may have caught something in the subcontinent but sometimes you don't even know what those things are.

“It was a 72-hour thing and I'm starting to feel a lot better now.”
