All set for PBC polls

LAHORE, Dec 21: The Punjab Bar Council (PbBC) members are all set to elect 11 members from the province for the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) seats in the election being held on Wednesday (today).

As many as 75 members of PbBC will vote for their favourites among the 30 candidates in the run.

The candidates are: Hamid Khan, Muhammad Ahsan Bhoon, Ramzan Chaudhry, Azam Nazir Tarar, Syed Qalb-e-Hasan, Muhammad Maqsood Buttar, Mian Abbas, Mian Israrul Haq, Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, Sardar Khurram Latif Khosa, Chaudhry Shehram Sarwar, Burhan Muazzam Malik, Mian Quddus, Nasrullah Warraich, Anwar Akhtar, Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf Wahlah, Mian Muhammad Shafiq, Chaudhry M Khalid Farooq, Muhammad Arif Alvi, Rana Zia Abdul Rehman, Farrukh Mehmood, Sardar Manzoor Ahmad Khan, Muhammad Kalim Ahmad Khurshid, Syed Asghar Hussain Sabzwari, Abdul Aziz Khan Niazi, Tanvirur Rehman Randhawa, Malik Khalid Mehmood, Mehmood Ashraf Khan, Muhammad Sher Cheena and Muhammad Maqsood Ahmad.

The elections for PBC Punjab seats would be held in the office of Punjab advocate general, who is presiding officer for the election in Lahore.

The voting will continue from 9am to 3pm. Unofficial results will be announced the same day, while the official notification will be issued on Dec 31.

Of total 22 PBC seats allocated to the provinces, Punjab has 11, Khyber Pakhtunkhawa 4, Sindh 6, and Balochistan has 1 seat.

To contest PBC election, a candidate must have the Supreme Court Bar Association membership.

Attorney General of Pakistan is the Election Commission, while all four advocate generals will act as presiding officers in the polls.

Senate employees will conduct the election and hold counting by applying a formula according to which every voter can cast 11 votes for as many seats from Punjab but he or she has to prioritise the  candidates.

The top priority vote will give 100 points to the candidate while down the priority list points will keep on decreasing.
