Highwayman killed by friendly fire

CHAKWAL, Dec 15: A highwayman died of his accomplice’s fire as a young man resisted their attempt to snatch money and cellphone, ending their looting spree on Tuesday night, police said.

Police said the highwaymen blocking the road near Dhudial were looting the passengers for two hours. However, when a young man resisted the three robbers’ demand for his cash and cellphone, one of them opened fire. But instead of hitting the young man, it hit the other robber, killing him on the spot.

In panic the two other robbers fled, leaving behind the body of accomplice. The dead robber was identified Qasim belonged to Chak Baili village.

The looted passengers claimed when they called Dhudial police station, they were told the policemen were tired because of patrolling duty for Muharram.

In a second robbery near District Complex on Tuesday night, highwaymen looted a passenger van. Some of the looted passengers said the robbers tortured them before taking away cash and valuables. They also claimed that the police did not register case against the robbers.

Another passenger van was looted from Dumman. One of the looted passengers Javed Iqbal said robbers took Rs8,500 from him along with cellphones. Protesting over the incident, the people of the area blocked the road and chanted slogans against police.

District Police Officer Syed Mohsin Ali said the robbers’ gangs would be arrested soon.
