Mazhar breaks two records in Sindh Open swimming

KARACHI, Oct 23: Talented, young swimmer Mazhar Naqvi produced a sterling show by setting up two new records on the opening day of the 50th Sindh Open and Junior Age Group Swimming Championship at Karachi Gymkhana pool here on Saturday.

The 17-year-old international, representing Karachi Club, created new records in men`s 100-metre freestyle and 50-metre butterfly to steal the limelight in front of a packed crowd.

Mazhar improved the 11-year-old record of Abbas Dhanji of 58.54 seconds in 100 metre freestyle by clocking 58.53 seconds. He also improved the 50-metre butterfly record of Hasan Youshe of 29.48 seconds with a new timing of 28.92 seconds.

In the boys` under-14, 50-metre backstroke Raza Hussain improved the 43.44 seconds record of Ali Soorty by clocking 42.97 seconds to grab the gold.

Aneeq Anwar of Defence Public School also had an excellent day in the pool by grabbing four gold medals in boys` under-16 category. —APP
