In the loop: Laal pays tribute

The band broke into the Pakistani music scene in 2009 with its song Umeed-e-Sehr based on the poetry by renowned poet, Habib Jalib. Massively promoted by a local television network the band became a huge hit and its music was also used as the signature tune for the lawyer’s movement.

They even created a song out of a poem written by Aitezaz Ahsan, during the movement, called Kal Aaj Aur Kal. After the intial hype ended, however, the band seemed to have disappeared with plans for releasing an album this year which, friends of the band mentioned, would be better than their previous work.

So far their lyrical content has largely been based on poetry by Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Habib Jalib. One wonders which poet they plan to pick next.

True to the style they emoted in their music video for Umeed-e-Sehr, their latest release Doob Gaya Hai, a song they penned as a tribute for the flood-affected victims shows stock imagery of the afflicted that is heartbreaking to see. It is a soft number, simple in its construction and with the rhythm guitar providing a soothing effect for the listener.

It speaks from the perspective of someone who has lost his home in the flood. The song strays away from sounding too clichéd and is definitely slated to become another hit for the band. It is available for view on YouTube.
