Judgment in Meerwala case on 31st

DERA GHAZI KHAN, Aug 27: The verdict in the Meerwala gang-rape case has been postponed until Saturday.

Elite police commandos had ringed the court here ahead of Tuesday’s expected verdict after a month-long hearing into the case.

“The judge has fixed Aug 31 to announce the verdict,” public prosecutor Iftikhar Ahmed told reporters outside the court.

Prosecutors have demanded the death penalty for 14 men, including members of a tribal council accused of ordering the rape of 30-year-old woman and the four men who allegedly carried it out. Judge Zulfiqar Ali Malik hinted he would announce the verdict on Tuesday after the prosecution and defence wrapped up their arguments on Saturday. —AFP
