Saudi plane makes emergency landing

ROME, Oct 8: A Saudi Airlines passenger jet made an emergency landing at Rome’s main airport early on Monday after being warned a bomb might be on board, but a subsequent search failed to uncover any explosives, airport sources said.

The Jeddah-London flight landed after the carrier’s destination airport, London Heathrow, received two anonymous phone calls threatening that the plane would explode on arrival in London, Rome airport security sources said.

The sources said Heathrow officials then informed Saudi Airlines, which told the crew of the threat. The plane was over Italian airspace when the crew received the warning.

Police bomb disposal experts in Rome failed to find any explosives aboard the Boeing 777, sources said.

An airline official said the 75 passengers and 14 crew would be allowed to reboard the plane.—Reuters
