SANGHAR A veteran of historical Hur Movement Ghazi Manthar Faqir Nizamani died at the age of 110 years here on Monday.

Faqir Manthar has left six sons and two daughters to mourn his death.

His wife predeceased him many years ago.

He was buried in Ghulam Hyder Faqir graveyard near Khipro. No political leader or bigwig of the area attended the last rituals.

Manthar Faqir was among the first batch of guerrillas who were recruited by Pir Sibghtullah Shah Rashdi, popularly known as Sooriah Badshah (gallant king) -- the father of Pir Pagaro -- in 1937-38 at Grange Bungalow.

The guerrilla army was raised to fight the British Raj and the freedom fighters fought gallantly to oust the colonial power.

In a famous skirmish at Kot Nawab against Bugti tribesmen who were brought there by the British to fight against the Hurs, 40 Bugtis were killed.

On May 15, 1942, Manthar Faqir along with other Hurs derailed Lahore Mail at Wahab Shah near Tando Adam. The train was derailed on a tip-off that it was bringing British troops from Karachi to Shahdadpur and Nawabshah.

In another encounter, Manthar Faqir along with Miroo Nizamani, Mathoo Khaskheli and others killed seven army men and a white officer who was commanding British troops at Aajay Waro Daro in Makhi forest.

Manthar Faqir participated in several other skirmishes with British troops and their loyal tribes.

The unsung hero of the Hur Movement spent his last days in abject poverty. However, he never asked anybody for help because he was a man of principles.

Hur Movement began under Sooriah Badshah in 1831 when he provided fighters to Syed Ahmed Shaheed to fight against Sikhs.

After Sooriah Badshah launched armed resistance to free Sindh from the yoke of slavery, martial law was imposed in Sindh and thousands of Hurs were arrested and sent to prisons in far flung areas of India and remote islands of Indian ocean.

Sooriah Badshah was arrested on Oct 24, 1941 and later hanged in Karachi prison in a clandestine way. Grange Bungalow was bombarded and destroyed on May 26, 1943.

Hurs continued fight against colonial rulers from Makhi forest until air bombing of Grange bungalow, Makhi forest and Dargah Sharif.
