Musharraf leaves on 3-country tour today

NEW YORK, Nov 6: For the first time since becoming America’s most important ally in its war on terrorism President Pervez Musharraf would meet one on one with the United States President George W. Bush on Saturday at the sidelines of UN General assembly’s high level session.

Before coming to New York, President Musharraf will visit France and meet with the French President Jacques Chirac on Wednesday. On Thursday Gen. Musharraf will go to Great Britain and meet with the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Both Western allies presently in Washington would fly back home to be in time to meet the Pakistani leader.

In New York, President Bush would hold a special dinner for President Musharraf on Saturday night in which the two would have an opportunity to discuss the US war in Afghanistan in an effort to ferret out America’s number one enemy Osama bin Laden implicated in Sept 11 attacks on the US.

The UNGA session has attained special significance in the wake of Sept 11 attacks on the US and the postponement of the session since.

General Musharraf who is scheduled to arrive in New York on Friday would be heading a very small Pakistan delegation which would include Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar and the Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz.

On Saturday General Musharraf would address the United Nations General assembly’s special session which would also be addressed by the US President George Bush, Indian Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee. After attending a luncheon hosted by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan for the heads of the state and government General Musharraf would have a half hour one on one meeting with Mr Annan.

According to diplomats the UN chief is expected to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and raise the issue of Afghan refugees and thank Pakistan for its support to various UN relief agencies.

In the evening President Musharraf would attend the dinner being hosted for him by the US President George W. Bush which is extraordinary in its gesture because earlier Mr Bush would be hosting a reception for the world leaders at the Metropolitan Museum. Following the dinner, both Mr Bush and President Musharraf would hold a joint press briefing at which the US president is expected to invite General Musharraf to Washington at a later date. President Musharraf is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings with several heads of states and governments who will be attending the UNGA special session.

No particular appointments could be confirmed as many heads of state would make last minute decision to attend the session due to security reasons. On Sunday the President Musharraf would attend a community dinner being held at a local hotel in which over a thousand people have been invited.
