DNA test confirms body was Pearl’s

KARACHI, July 27: The Sindh police on Saturday confirmed that the remains of a body found in Gulzar-i-Hijri in May were those of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter, who was murdered by his kidnappers.

The confirmation was made by the Sindh police after receiving report of DNA test from Lahore.

The Capital City Police Officer, Asad Jehangir, while confirming the result, told Dawn that the police had sent the specimen for DNA tests to Lahore.

“We have received the report from the Centre for Excellence and Molecular Biology, Lahore. The DNA tests have confirmed that the remains were those of Daniel Pearl,” Asad Jehangir said.

When asked whether results of DNA test had been received from the United States, Jehangir said he was not aware about it.

A statement issued by the Sindh home department said the National Centre for Excellence and Molecular Biology, Lahore, after conducting relevant tests, had confirmed that the body parts recovered from a shallow grave in the police limits of Gulzar-i-Hijri on the night of May 16 were those of Daniel Pearl.
