Shafqat Rana, Ijaz Ahmed given U-19 assignments

LAHORE, Oct 27 The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday gave former Test cricketers Shafqat Rana and Ijaz Ahmed new roles in the national under-19 set-up, naming the former as manager of the squad while appointing the latter as coach.

Shafqat has been named as manager of the under-19 squad till next year's World Cup, while Ijaz Ahmed, after a minor controversy, has been confirmed as coach of the squad till the mega event.

Shafqat was the associate manager of the Pakistan team for the recently held ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa. He was tipped as manager of the national team in place of Yawar Saeed who resigned after the Trophy.

While the PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt wanted to continue with Yawar for Pakistan senior team's ODI series against New Zealand next month, a row over the captaincy that resulted in Younis Khan tendering his resignation, made the chairman relieve the manager.

In place of Yawar, former prominent first-class cricketer Abdul Raqeeb was appointed. The move though bothered both Yawar and Shafqat, Ijaz Butt had managed to convince Shafqat by giving him new assignment. And to make Yawar happy, Ijaz Butt went to Yawar's place on Saturday and successfully convinced him over his ouster, which, according to sources, was due to the pressure of high-ups.

Meanwhile, Ijaz Ahmed, who was a member of the national selection committee headed by former Test spinner Iqbal Qasim, sources said, was not comfortable in that set up. Therefore, Ijaz Butt has now given him the assignment of coaching the under-19 team.

While Ijaz Butt had ensured him the assignment till the U-19 World Cup, Chief Operating Officer Wasim Bari issued him the letter till the next off-shore series against Sri Lanka, triggering a controversy.

However, on Tuesday, a PCB press release stated that Ijaz Ahmed's tenure as coach has been extended till the World Cup.
