Boy hurt after pulling hand grenade pin

HYDERABAD, Oct 6 A lad working at a motor mechanic workshop received injuries on Monday after removing the pin of a hand grenade he found accidentally from the dashboard items of a car.

The workshop is situated in front of Al-amna Complex in Cantonment area.

The Makki Shah police arrested three suspects, including two employees of the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd while Shahzad was taken to the Civil Hospital for receiving injuries in lower abdomen but was said to be out of danger.

The workshop owner Shamsuddin Abro alias Pappu said that another of his workers Dilshad had brought the 2008 model Alto car bearing registration ARK-316 for an AC fault.

Sikandar Hussain, a Supervisor in the PTCL, told Dawn that he bought the car from Ali Raza Rind only three to four days back and was to make full payment on Monday but heard some sound in the air-conditioner and decided to consult his mechanic Dilshad. He parked the car at the workshop and left for his office.

The mechanic Dilshad said that he went to the market after removing the dashboard and perhaps could not identify the hand grenade which was among the items he retrieved from it and on return found Shahzad sitting on the driving seat in injured condition. Dilshad said that the boy might have accidentally hit on the device and because of the ignorance pulled the pin thus detonating it. Car's windowpanes were smashed and initially, the mechanic avoided reporting the matter to police but the area people did.

Shahzad's version could not be obtained as he was undergoing medical intervention at the hospital for his injuries.

Policemen from Makki Shah and secret agencies officials reached there while the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) led by Mr Fakhar examined the vehicle.

Police called Ali Raza Rind who said that the car was initially owned by Saeed Pathan, Manager at the Askari Petrol Pump, off Qasim chowk but the efforts to contact Pathan failed. The showroom is owned by Zubair Janwari.

Sikandar Hussain said that his friend Shahid Sahto, an employee of the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) had bought the car from the showroom. Police arrested Shahid Sahto, Sikandar Hussain and Ali Raza Rind.

The BDS official said that it was a Russian small hand-grenade and perhaps old and expired or else a large area would've been affected.

The DPO Hyderabad constituted a team led by SP Investigation, Ghulam Nabi Keerio to probe the case.
