PESHAWAR: Directorates to be merged

PESHAWAR, June 17: The NWFP government has decided to re-merge the directorates of primary and secondary education in the province from the next financial year, it is learnt officially.

Sources in the Directorate of Primary Education informed Dawn here on Monday that the government was creating a joint directorate of schools and literacy to manage the administrative and financial affairs of all primary and secondary schools in the province.

A Grade-20 officer will be appointed soon to manage the affairs of the new directorate. The directorates of primary and secondary education are likely to be merged by the end of June, the source said.

The employees of the education department have termed the restructuring of the education department and creation of one directorate a move against the decentralisation of education and other department initiated by the National Reconstruction Bureau. It will pave the way for further downsizing, they apprehended.

The sources said that the government had also planned to abolish the offices of drawing disbursement (both male and female) in all the districts and they would be replaced by deputy district officer.

It is also learnt that the government has decided to give financial and administrative autonomy to the NWFP Sports Board from the coming fiscal year.
