President orders probe

ISLAMABAD, April 14: Information Minister Nisar A. Memon said here on Sunday the president had taken a serious note of the “unfortunate incident” involving journalists in Faisalabad and ordered an immediate and full investigation.

The president, he said, had asked the Punjab government to complete the inquiry expeditiously and take prompt action against all those officers who transgressed the law.

“All those found guilty will be punished,” he assured.

The information minister said President Pervez Musharraf “is a firm believer in freedom of the press.”

“The complete freedom enjoyed by the press in Pakistan during the last two years and a half is a testimony to that belief and policy,” the minister said.

He reiterated the government’s continued commitment to freedom of the press and appealed to the journalists not to allow this unfortunate incident to affect the “harmonious ties that have existed between the govt and the press.” —APP
