Woman gets two rupees in tsunami aid

NEW DELHI, April 29: An Indian woman paid just two rupees (four US cents) in compensation for damage to her coconut groves by tsunami waves has angrily returned the state aid, an official admitted on Friday. Charity Champion sent back the cheque from local government aid officials who assessed the damage to her coconut crop at two rupees.

“I was amazed the assessment team which came in January calculated that she be paid just two rupees. It was absolutely absurd,” the official said.—AFP
