LANDI KOTAL: ANP demands abolition of militia checkpoints

LANDI KOTAL, July 31: The president of the Khyber Agency chapter of the Awami National Party, Imran Afridi, has demanded the abolition of all militia checkposts in the Khyber Agency.

Speaking to party workers in Landi Kotal, while inaugurating a new party unit at Sultankhel area on Friday, Mr Afridi said that the checkposts, had created great inconvenience for tribesmen due to their checking and body search, by the personnel of the Frontier Constabulary.

He criticized the proposed creation of tribal councils and demanded that the NWFP governor should arrange for the holding of local bodies polls in all the seven tribal agencies without further delay.

The gathering through a resolution demanded immediate halt to prolonged and unannounced loadshedding of electricity in Landi Kotal.

Through another resolution, the participants expressed concern over the water shortage in Landi Kotal and demanded that work should be immediately started on the recommended Shalman water supply scheme.

Our Peshawar Correspondent adds: The Public Transport Union, Landi Kotal, held a demonstration here against excessive checking of buses at various checkposts by Khasadars.

A statement issued by the union president, Saifur Rehman Shinwari, said that bus owners and drivers were facing problems due to the excessive checking.

The bus owners and drivers went on a token strike on the appeal of the union president. They were holding placards and banners and protested against the checking and uncivilized conduct of the Khasadars with the transporters.
