India sweep series

CHITTAGONG, Dec 20: Off spinner Harbhajan Singh took the final Bangladesh wicket on the fourth morning as India won the second and final Test by an innings and 83 runs to complete a 2-0 series sweep on Monday.

Harbhajan had number 11 batsman Talha Jubair caught at long-on by Irfan Pathan with the fourth delivery of the day as Bangladesh folded for 124 in their second innings.

The home team were 118 for nine overnight after India enforced the follow on, having bowled Bangladesh out for 333 in reply to their first innings 540. Jubair hoisted Harbhajan for a six over long on to top score with 31 before falling trying to repeat the shot.

Left-armer Irfan produced a superb post-tea spell on Sunday, claiming the first five wickets to finish with five for 32. It was the 20-year-old pace man's third five-wicket haul in the series, after capturing 11 for 96 in the innings and 140-run victory in Dhaka last week. He took 18 wickets in the series.

Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Ashraful, 20, who hit 158 not out on Sunday, was declared man of the match and Irfan player of the series. It was defeat number 31 from 34 matches since Bangladesh made their test debut in 2000. The lowest-ranked Test side have lost their last five matches by an innings.

Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar was hopeful his top-order batsmen would put up a better performance in future. "Ashraful, it's good to see him score consistently, but we need to do better in batting.

"One of the things we have been taking about, we have been losing too many wickets to the new ball. If we get out of that habit, we should be okay." India captain Saurav Ganguly was pleased with his team's Test record in 2004.

They lost 2-1 at home to Australia after a creditable 1-1 draw away and a maiden 2-1 series win in Pakistan. He said Bangladesh deserved more time to improve. The two teams now meet in a one-day series which starts on Thursday with the first game in Chittagong.
