LAHORE: Police can't charge for investigation

LAHORE, Dec 14: Police investigation chief SSP Chaudhry Shafqaat has appealed to the public not to give a single penny to investigators of their cases (as cost of investigation).

At a news conference on Tuesday, he said an amount of Rs11.8 million had already been distributed this year among investigators for the purpose.

On receiving complaints of making people pay the cost of investigation, he said six investigators - Rana Nawaz, Munir Ahmad, Muhammad Munir, Mukhtar Ahmad, Abbas Ali and Shahzad- have been booked under relevant charges. "They may face dismissal from service if proven guilty," he said.

TWO SLAIN: Two people were reportedly murdered in separate incidents in the city on Tuesday. Police said that alleged drug pushers Yasin Gujjar and Faisal Butt exchanged fire in Gowalmandi.

A passer by woman, Rozina, 28, the mother of three, and a youngster, Nasir, sustained bullet wounds. Both the groups managed their escape from the scene, and the injured people were rushed to the Mayo Hospital. The woman died after first aid and the other injured was stated to be in critical condition.

The body was sent to the city mortuary for autopsy. A case was registered with no arrest. The Lahore Nazim of the Islami Jamiat Talaba alleged that a student of his group was murdered and another wounded in a hit-and-run accident on Wahdat Road.

He said that Sajid Chaudhry and Hassan Chaudhry of the Government Science College were on their way when their motorcycle was hit by a rashly driven car. He said both the students sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital. Sajid died and the other student was stated to be in critical condition.

The Lahore Nazim alleged that former warden of the Science College Jamshid Bokhari and three accomplices Khurram Bokhari, Luqman and Mustaqeem were involved in the accident. He claimed it was planned murder. He said political differences was a motive behind the crime. The body was removed to the city mortuary for autopsy. A case was registered with no arrest.

ACCIDENT: A youngster was killed and around 13 other people suffered injuries in an accident at Jia Moosa in Shahdara on Tuesday. The police said that a bus hit a motorcycle and overturned when its driver lost control over the wheel. Motorcyclist Arshad, 22, got wounds and died in hospital.

Twelve bus passengers sustained injuries and admitted to hospitals. Of them, four were stated to be in critical condition. The body was handed over to the respective family without autopsy. A case was registered against the absconding bus driver.

CORRUPTION: The news conference was marred by a row between the SSP and a group of crime reporters on allegations of corruption. When reporters pointed out corruption in police ranks, Shafqaat said: "I would never defend corrupt elements in police. They deserve similar treatment as the English would do to their aging horses.

But the corrupt among newsmen should also be pointed out," the officer said. Citing a case to support his argument, he said that a crime reporter of an Urdu daily was caught riding a stolen motorcycle.

He identified the accused reporter as Younus Baath, and said the motorcycle was seized and the police let the reporter go. "It was a concession that we did not book him in a theft case."

But, he alleged, the reporter continued blackmailing him. Saying that he has everything on the record, the police chief ordered registration of a case against the accused reporter and his arrest.

GANGS: Police investigation wing claimed on Tuesday having arrested 10 members of two alleged gangs of robbers. The arrests were announced in a press conference by police investigation chief SSP Chaudhry Shafqaat,

The police chief identified the arrested men of the two gangs as Yasin alias Mithu, Makhdoom alias Baggu, Shabbir Ahmad, Muhammad Azam, Riaz Ahmad, Binyamin, Adnan Shaukat, Imran alias Goga, Karamat Ali and Nadeem alias Deema. He said police had recovered booty worth Rs 2.6 million from the arrested men besides 10 pistols and 80 bullets.
