Germans preparing for European Championship

LAHORE, Nov 29: Bernhard Peters, German hockey coach, says he is concentrating on European championship and World Cup not next month's Champions Trophy for which he has brought a young team.

"I have 14 new players who are not Olympians but they do have some international exposure," Peters said after supervising the training session at National Hockey Stadium. "Some seasoned players are taking rest, while others are on their professional duties," the coach said.

"I will not predict first spot for my team and will be satisfied with fourth or fifth. We are focussing on European championship and the World Cup. Champions Trophy will only give my players a good exposure," said the coach whose side finished at sixth place in the last edition of Trophy in the Netherlands.

Peters said his team would get more practice opportunities by facing New Zealand in a warm-up match on Tuesday and the defending champions the Netherlands on Thursday afternoon.

About the newly-laid turf at the venue he said that although it was slippery, he hoped it would be in perfect condition before the main event. Germany captain Philipp Crone said although his team was youthful, yet they were capable of giving a surprise. However, he said that if they achieved fourth spot it would not be bad performance.
