LTTE seeks self-rule for North East

COLOMBO, May 27: The United People's Freedom Alliance government of Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga was stump faced with the LTTE's condition demanding implementation of the agreement regarding self-governing structure for the North East. The rebels made it a pre-condition for resuming talks with the government.

"We need the government to give us this assurance in writing, that they will let us implement our proposals made for self- governing before we sit down to formally discuss a political solution", LTTE's political chief, S. Thamilchelvam told the Norwegian peace envoy for Sri Lanka, Erik Solheim.

The LTTE proposals made last year to the government, after it walked out of peace talks, was declared by Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar as a "blueprint" for a separate state.

In Colombo, Media Minister and Cabinet spokesperson Reginald Cooray told journalists on Thursday that the government was not in a position to give an immediate response to the LTTE.
