QUETTA: Nazims, councillors call off strike

QUETTA, May 20: The protesting Nazims and councillors of Quetta have called off their token hunger strike following President Musharraf's directives to Chief Minister Jam Muhammad Yousuf to hand over Wasa to the city district government.

Speaking at a news conference in the hunger strike camp on Thursday, City District Nazim Muhammad Rahim Kakar, along with his Naib Mir Wali Muhammad Lehri, threatened with a more serious step if the provincial government did not positively respond to the president's decision till June 15.

Rahim Kakar said the president in the meeting attended by the four chief ministers formed a committee to submit a comprehensive report on issues emerging out of the implementation of the district government system and suggest ways to resolve them.

The Nazim warned that we would not allow bureaucrats or some ministers to sabotage the new system. Ordinance 2001 empowered the district council to take decisions.
