Shahid topples Darwish

ISLAMABAD, Feb 22: Egyptian top seed Karim Darwish will be taking an early flight home after falling at the first hurdle to Pakistan's Shahid Zaman on a day of upsets in the main round of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) International squash championship that began on Sunday.

Shahid, ranked 43 advanced to quarterfinals as he bounced back after losing the first game to his 8th ranked rival for a 13-15, 15-10, 15-13 win with Darwish retiring hurt in the fourth game.

Darwish's defeat in the first match of the day set the pattern of things to come as home star Mansoor Zaman was shown the door by Egypt's Hisham M Ashour in another surprising result.

Much was expected from Mansoor but he failed to deliver handing Hisham, ranked 22 places below him, a 15-9, 7-15, 15-6, 15-6 victory and a place in the quarterfinals.

Later in the day qualifier Khayal Muhammad also sprang a big surprise knocking out Frenchman Renan Lavigne, who is No 20, in a tough five-game encounter 6-15, 15-11, 4-15, 15-11, 15-6.

Khayal had made a shaky start in the first game but recovered quickly to win the next in which he displayed a fine array of strokes. He fell behind again in the third before recovering to capture the next two and finish his rival off.

Another qualifier Majid Khan stunned the 43-ranked Farrukh Zaman in the longest match of the day. It took Khayal almost an hour and a half to score a 15-3, 6-15, 15-12, 11-15, 15-12 victory that earned him a place in the quarters.

In other matches of the day, Egyptian Muhammad Abbas downed England's Peter Barker 15-6, 15-7, 15-11 and Adrian Grant edged out Ben Garner 15-13, 15-6, 17-15.

No 2 seed Omar Elborolossy of Egypt was extended to four games by Saeed Hassan before advancing with a 15-12, 15-7, 12-15, 15-12 win.
