KARACHI, April 18: Three people committed suicide here on Friday, two of them by throwing themselves in front of moving trains.

Two of the incidents occurred about 10 minutes apart on the railway track along Sharae Faisal — at the Wireless Gate and Malir Halt.

An officer of the railway police who was on duty at the time said the first incident took place on the Drigh Road track where Mohammad Arsalan, 22, came in front of the Sukkur Express coming to Karachi at 10.13am.

“The young man threw himself in front of the train,” said ASI Irshad Baig. Quoting Arsalan’s family members and friends, he said that the deceased was a graduate, but jobless. One of his friends said that his family used to taunt him about being unemployed.

On Friday morning, Arsalan told his family that he was going for a stroll.

“We were retrieving the body of Arsalan when we heard about another incident at Malir Halt,” ASI Irshad said.

Abdul Majid, 40, ended his life in the same manner. Locals said he suffered some mental problems. Majid threw himself in front of a goods train heading out of the city. “No suicide notes were found, but eyewitness accounts suggest that both Arsalan and Majid committed suicide,” the ASI said.

The third suspected suicide case was of a tailor who consumed some poisonous substance. Police said Safdar Ali, 25, had two children. His wife used to have altercations with him over his limited earnings.
