HYDERABAD: Blame game starts over milk price

HYDERABAD, April 2: The dairy farmers are reluctant to review the increase in per litre price of milk on the ground that they are already hit by inflation and sharp rise in electricity rates, cost of wheat, transportation and fodder have forced them increase milk price.

While the retailers had linked the price reduction decision to negotiations or an action against dairy farmers.

The district government on the other hand has not activated its price monitoring body to intervene in the matter and when contacted over phone some members of it expressed ignorance about talks with dairy farmers or retailers.

One of them claimed that a meeting was held a week ago when the retailers indicated that they would increase milk price.

In Hyderabad retailers always link increase in milk price with change in per litre price in Karachi. Now they claim that retailers in Karachi were selling milk at Rs42 per litre and because of that they had revised price to Rs40 per litre from its earlier Rs34 or Rs32 per litre.

According to Retail Milk Sellers Welfare Association general secretary Faheemuddin Sheikh the dairy farmers were supplying them milk at Rs1445 per 40 litres, putting the cost of one litre at Rs 36.12 paisa at wholesale rate.
