Musharraf urged to call it quits
LARKANA, Nov 17: The general secretary of the Sindh chapter of Jamiat Uelma-i-Islam (JUI), Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro, said on Saturday General Pervez Musharraf had become a security risk for the country and urged him to call it quits.
He said that the resident had held the country hostage to strengthen his dictatorship in the garb of democracy and pushed the country into grave crisis.
Mr Soomro said that the struggle against emergency would continue and called for the restoration of constitution, reinstatement of dismissed judges, release of political workers, rights activists and lawyers.
The central body of JUI would meet in Islamabad on Sunday to discuss future line of action, he said.
He accused Larkana police of beating the protesting JUI workers and lobbing tear gas shells on their gathering.
Mr Soomro accused two police officers of torturing the protesters and demanded their suspension.
ARRESTS: Larkana police on Saturday arrested four activists of Awami Tehrik at the main gate of Jinnahbagh when they staged a demonstration carrying placards in protest against emergency.
Ghulam Abbass Chandio, Sikandar Ali Brohi, Wazeer Ali Khskheli and Manzoor Ali Brohi were booked for violating section 144. The police, meanwhile, released five workers of JUI Abdul Basit Bhutto, Abdul Latif Narejo, Abdul Manan and Saleem Channa.
The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) and People’s Doctors Forum (PDF) launched a signature campaign against the imposition of emergency and curbs on media.
The doctors affiliated with PMA and PDF wore black armbands and hoisted black flags on the hospitals, said a press release jointly signed by Dr Shoukat Abro, president PDF Larkana and Dr Waheed Memon, president of PMA Larkana.
