HYDERABAD: Sugar mills urged to start crushing

HYDERABAD, Oct 29: The Sindh Abadgar Board reminded the Chief Minister of the decision made earlier to start cane crushing in the first week of November, and millers to provide sugar to federal government the same month.

The Board conveyed the message through a communication notifying that the decisions were taken during a meeting of the federal, provincial governments and the PSMA.

The Board expressed apprehensions over the Sindh mills’ intention to fulfil commitment and spelled out far reaching implications in case of delay.

The Board’s General Secretary, Mehmood Nawaz Shah said Pakistan was facing wheat shortage as growers were compelled to sell the crop at Rs410 per 40kg, and consumers could not procure it even at Rs650 per 40kg, while the international market was much higher.

He said the government was considering importing three million cotton bales to meet local requirements of textile industry.

Nawaz Shah said this way the government would spend billions of dollars on import of wheat and cotton which was due to the lack of planning and foresight of concerned authorities.

He said the government should avoid sugar shortage and direct the mills to start the crushing season as per their commitment. Any delay, he said, will be detrimental to national economy.
