Bid to kidnap army officer: six dead

MIRAMSHAH, July 6: Four outlaws and two tribal volunteers were killed and a military officer and five other people wounded in a clash between a lashkar and a gang of criminals here on Friday.

Officials and local people said Capt Faisal Islam of the Razmak Cadet College and his two guards were going to Peshawar when an armed gang stopped their vehicle in Sarobi area, snatched their guns and took the official away.

A jirga of Dirdoni tribe was in progress at that time to discuss the murder of a tribesman. A guard of Capt Faisal reached there and informed the elders about the kidnapping.

The elders suspended the jirga and asked their armed volunteers to go after the kidnappers. The lashkar traced the kidnappers and surrounded them in Sarobi area. The kidnappers opened fire on the lashkar to break the cordon.

In the ensuing clash, four kidnappers and two tribal volunteers were killed and five members of the lashkar and Capt Faisal were wounded.

The wounded army officer was taken by a helicopter to a military hospital in Bannu.

Officials said that the bodies of the kidnappers who belonged to North Waziristan, had been removed by some unknown people.
