HYDERABAD: Doctor leaves gauze, threads in patient’s abdomen

HYDERABAD, March 13: A mother of four on Tuesday appealed to higher authorities to cancel registration of a private hospital and certificate of a woman doctor who did her caesarean section operation and left a piece of gauze and threads inside her womb.

Thirty-year-old Shazia Kanwal told a press conference at the local press club that the doctor’s inefficiency had led to serious complications for her health and the hospital near Memon Charitable Hospital on Domanwah Road where she had been operated upon had refused to offer her any compensation or financial assistance.

"Dr. Farzana Nazakat who operated upon me was solely responsible for my predicament. Four days after I gave birth to a baby girl on Jan 29 I started feeling pain and approached the hospital," said Ms Kanwal whose husband works in a soap factory.

The hospital provided her treatment for some days and then referred her to another hospital, she said and added she had been under treatment at the hospital for past nine months.

"When the pain became unbearable I went to another private hospital where a surgeon Dr. Qamar had my ultrasound, which revealed presence of gauze and threads in the abdomen,” she said.

She said that she had been going to the hospital for a month now but the pain did not go. The doctor told her that a fibroid had developed inside her womb, which could pose serious danger to her life, she said and demanded cancellation of registration of the hospital and license of Dr. Farzana Nazakat. "I have so far spent around Rs40,000 to Rs45,000 but my husband could no more afford treatment. He had already run into debts during my treatment," she said.
