PESHAWAR: Markets remain shut as nazims, naib nazims laid to rest

PESHAWAR, Jan 28: Two union council nazims and a naib nazim who had died in Saturday’s suicide attack were laid to rest in the presence of hundreds of mourners here on Sunday.

Nauthia Union Council Nazim Asif Khan Baghi, Andar Shehar UC Nazim Mohammad Ali Safi and Naib Nazim Mian Iftikhar had been killed in the attack, while Wazirbagh Nazim Malik Noor Rehman had been injured.

The Nauthia Bazaar, slaughter houses and meat shops in the cantonment, Andar Shehar Bazaar, Qissakhwani and Peepal Mandi remained closed to mourn the deaths.

The funeral prayers for Mr Safi, Mr Iftikharuddin and Fazl Rahim, a trader, were offered on Naz Cinema Road, Mr Baghi’s funeral prayers were offered at Football Ground in Civil Quarters area.

COMPENSATION: NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has announced compensation of Rs1 million for the heirs of the nazims and the naib nazim, a spokesman told APP.

BLAST CONDEMNED: Political parties on Sunday condemned the Saturday’s bomb blast here and expressed concern over government’s failure to eliminate terrorists.

The Pukhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party’s (PMAP) provincial secretariat in a press release condemned and expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the province. “Life of not a single person is safe in the province as was evident from the Saturday’s blast. Killing of senior and junior police officials and civilians is a brutal act,” the press release said.

The PMAP held the army and intelligence agencies responsible for encouraging religious extremists and sectarian elements.

The party demanded that the government should close bases of terrorism and take action against subversive elements, the statement said.

In a press release, the provincial wing of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) condemned the killing of CCPO Malik Saad, policemen and civilians, and demanded that the federal government should resign for its failure to protect the people.

PML-N secretary-general Zafar Iqbal Jhagra and other office-bearers criticised the government for causing anarchy in the country.

Civilians had been targeted in major cities, including Islamabad, but the government claimed that the situation was under control, the press release said.

Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao should resign for his failure to keep law and order intact, they demanded.

Our Correspondent from Bajaur Agency adds: Political and religious circles in the Bajaur Agency condemned the Peshawar bomb blast and demanded that the government should arrest those involved in the terrorist act.

INQUIRY DEMANDED: The Awami National Party (ANP) has demanded the government to hold an impartial inquiry into the Saturday’s bomb blast.

In a press release issued here from the Bacha Khan Markaz on Sunday, the ANP condemned the killing of two union nazims, one naib nazim and police officials in the bomb blast in Dhaki Daalgaran area of the Peshawar city.

The party demanded that the government should arrest those behind the terrorist act.

The ANP alleged that the government’s policies encouraged elements responsible for disrupting law and order situation and threatening life and property of the civilians, the press release said.

The party also demanded that the government should take effective measures for the protection of the people.
