HYDERABAD: Heavy rain paralyses Hyderabad

HYDERABAD, Aug 17: The fresh spell of heavy to moderate rain in the district on Thursday paralysed all life activities.

About 50mm rain was recorded in the city between 2 to 5pm and 21mm at the airport.

The Met office forecast said there would be rain and thunderstorm during the next 24 hours.

The sky was heavily overcast.

The rain coupled with thunderstorm and lightening began at around 3pm and continued till 5pm without break.

All the main roads were flooded with gushing rainwater which also entered homes located in low-lying areas. People tried at their own level to drain out rainwater.

The people including women were seen wading through knee-deep rainwater.

Residents said that while it rained heavily but the situation was not encouraging even before rains.

Our Sanghar correspondent adds: Heavy rain lashed the entire district on Thursday.

A large area of cotton crop came under rainwater.

The fast winds coupled with rain also damaged sugarcane.

The farmers have stopped to drain out water from the fields after doing it for several times.

The repeated tripping of power lines also have added to the miseries of the people.

Our Khairpur correspondent adds: Heavy dust storm hit Khairpur city and its adjoining areas on Wednesday night.

People faced hardships due to dust.

The entire city was plunged into darkness as electricity went off as soon as winds started blowing.

On Thursday, storm hit at 4pm which was followed by rain.

Electricity remained suspended for three hours.

Some trees on the National Highway and different roads of the city were uprooted due to which traffic remained suspended.

Our Nawabshah correspondent adds: Nawabshah and its adjoining towns received heavy rain on Thursday.

Electricity played hide and seek during the rain.

The Met office recorded 24mm rains till Thursday morning while the rain was continuing at the time of filing this report.
